Personal Note: AI Boom Drives Stock Markets and Vision M&A Transactions

AI-related stocks are skyrocketing, while the valuations of classic vision companies have not improved. But M&A activity for vision companies accelerated dramatically. In this report, we highlight over 70 vision-related M&A transactions since January 2025, with over 30 occurring in Q2 2026 alone. We see the following three primary trends:

  1. AI-enabled technologies and high-precision inspection are key growth drivers
  2. Strong deal flow for vision system companies in growing end markets
  3. Buy & Build platforms have become increasingly prevalent

1.) AI-enabled technologies and high-precision inspection are key growth drivers

According to EMVA, VDMA, and various market research institutes, key growth drivers are AI-enabled technologies and high-precision inspection. These factors also fuel the appetite for acquisitions in the vision industry. Examples of AI-driven transactions include Renesas acquisition of Irida Labs, OUSTER’s acquisition of StereoLabs, Indie Semi’s acquisition of Emotion3D, and Hexagon’s acquisition of IconPro.

2.) Strong deal flow for vision system companies in growing end markets

A few years ago, we saw many transactions involving vision components, such as lighting and cameras. Today, there is a clear shift towards more transactions involving target companies that offer complete vision systems, enabling buyers to deliver better overall solutions to their clients in well-growing end markets such as AI infrastructure and defense. The acquisitions of Nedinsco by Hensoldt, HGH by Theon (vision systems for defense), Antares Vision by Crane NXT (vision systems for pharmaceuticals), and Optek- Danulat by Crane Company (vision systems for process industries) are good examples.

3) Buy & Build platforms have become increasingly prevalent

Buy & Build platforms have become increasingly prevalent in the Vision industry and are often financially attractive for all stakeholders. On page 8, we outline eight such platforms and their transactions since January 2025. One example is NORD Holding, which acquired Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging to combine it with OR Technology Group to build a global multimodality veterinary imaging platform. In general, Buy & Build platforms offer two key advantages for sellers. First, where there is a strong strategic fit, the acquired company can make a meaningful contribution to the group’s overall performance. Second, the original owner may benefit financially from the multiple expansion upon the later sale of the enlarged group.
